Paper vs. Pixel is pointless w/o substance

Apparently, Sen. Benjamin Cardin (Maryland) has introduced the “Newspaper Revitalization Act of 2009” and it’s causing a bit of a stir, though I don’t think calling it a bailout is entirely accurate. The act seeks to allow newspapers to register as nonprofits. What exactly that would mean is unclear to me, however certain questions come to mind immediately. The first of such questions is; would freedom of the press remain?

My first thought in answer to that question is; threats of revoking the 501(c) (3) tax exempt status have been used to silence churches on political issues (1). This tax exempt status has also been used to coax churches into indoctrinating their congregations (2).

Following that thought, I have to wonder just how critical newspapers could become of government policies and still maintain their tax exempt status? Would this cause a publisher to not publish information that contradicts official government pronouncements? Would it encourage them to publish government friendly half truths (more than at present, that is)?

If you’ve been paying attention, the answers to these questions are obvious. About this I am not an optimist.

I just read an article on the Newsweek blog titled “Don’t Bail Out Newspapers–Let Them Die and Get Out of the Way” and it was really kind of weird, but thought provoking.

From the Newsweek article:

The fact is, all this hysteria has nothing to do with saving the news, or saving jobs. Nor is it about saving democracy, which is what the red-in-the-face newspaper lovers always get themselves huffed about, as if newspapers and democracy were inextricably linked. Democracy existed long before newspapers did, and it will survive without them. And plenty of countries that don’t have democracy do have newspapers. Nor would a bailout help readers. In fact, it would only slow down our shift to the Internet, which is a far better medium for delivering information…

It’s hilarious to hear these folks puff themselves up with talk about being the Fourth Estate, performing some valuable public service for readers—when in fact the real customer has always been the advertiser, not the reader. That truth has been laid bare in recent years. As soon as papers got desperate for cash, they dropped their “sacred principles” as readily as a call girl sheds her clothes. Ads on the front page? Reporters assigned to write sponsored content? No problem.

The part about papers dropping their “sacred principles” is something I agree with whole heartedly. I, however, find nothing about this hilarious. Mocking the importance of the press seems…  well, ignorant. Ignorant is exactly what we all are without the press performing its proper duty as the original government watchdog and reporting on the government’s actions (in our names, no less). The author of the article, Daniel Lyons, laughs at the idea that democracy and newspapers are some how linked, but I wonder how well a Republic would function with an ignorant populace. How can the people express their will to their ‘democratically elected’ representatives in government on issues they are not informed about?

That was a rhetorical question, of course, because we are learning the answer to that currently. What we end up with is a government on auto-pilot and flying us straight into oblivion, because the real pilot is seated in coach having cocktails in plastic cups, eating GMO peanuts, and possibly watching the in-flight movie.

Mr. Lyons begins his article with, “Nobody in their right mind believes the future of the news business involves paper and ink rather than pixels on a screen.” From there he rightly criticizes the print media for it’s lack of standards and substance, but is he aware of the irony? What makes cable news or online versions of print media any better? Nothing. Well, almost nothing, unless you like your propaganda with slick graphics and online polls.

Do you really think that the issue is paper vs. pixels? I don’t. I think it’s about information, and here’s where it gets real…

The Billings Gazette (in print medium) has been reporting on the strange goings on in Hardin, Montana for weeks now, where a shady and mysterious private security force has been trying to take over the town and run it’s vacant $27 million prison facility. Kudos to the Billings Gazette. To their credit, KULR channel 8 has also been covering the story. However, I don’t get the Billings Gazette or KULR 8 here in New Orleans, but I can link to their online versions, though I normally wouldn’t think to do so. My only local newspaper, the Times Picayune, isn’t reporting the story. I caught some broadcast CNN the other day and all they were reporting was that David Letterman has sex with women and that Chicago won’t be hosting the Olympics. gasp. It was the same with FOXNEWS, MSNBC, and whatever other channels I was able to scan. It wasn’t the New York Times (paper or pixel) that hipped me to this story, nor was it the precious online version of Newsweek. No, it was the INFOWARS.COM website that brought my attention to the Billings Gazette and KULR 8 articles. Where was Newsweek on this story?

What’s my point? My point is that it is not about paper vs. pixels, it is about information in whatever medium we can get it.

If current news outlets aren’t publishing real news, it’s no wonder they’re going out of business and alternative online news sites are exploding in popularity. Apparently I do prefer pixels, but as far as letting newspapers die or become tax exempt conduits for fluff and propaganda; I don’t know. I just want real news.

Private Contractors take over Hardin Montana!

The mystery surrounding the paramilitary force patrolling the streets of a town in Montana deepened last night after American Police Force founder “Captain” Michael Hilton was exposed as a career criminal and a convicted fraudster who has operated under numerous different aliases.

As we reported this week, Hardin Montana is currently being patrolled by a private organization completely outside the purview of the law as local authorities wait to seal a contract that will also see APF boss a $27 million dollar detention center located in the town.

APF’s founder, Michael Hilton, who ascribes himself the title “Captain” and speaks with an eastern European accent, has been at the center of the controversy after initially refusing to reveal his surname to reporters or even officials he was negotiating contracts with.

It has now emerged that “Michael Hilton” is merely the latest incarnation of a man previously known as Miodrag Dokovich, Michael Hamilton, Hristian Djokich and Michael Djokovich.

This just in! There is no such thing as legitimate opposition, there is only RACISM!

Carter: Racism plays major role in opposition to Obama – CNN.com

Politics Digest: Jimmy Carter Says Racism Is Behind Animosity to Obama – washingtonpost.com

It’s getting pretty darn creepy out there. Obama just renewed Blackwater’s (Xe) contract in Iraq, even though they’re not licensed to operate in that country, and is replacing troops leaving Iraq (to go to Afghanistan) with private, unlicensed  contractors. It’s a giant shell game! There it is! A legitimate issue and policy based criticism and I didn’t even have to bring up the fact that he’s extraterrestrial.

I guess some people liked being deceived.

Framing 9/11 Truthers as Van Jones Revolutionaries

Posted in Political Deception, Uncategorized on September 6, 2009 by goodmangreen

Framing 911 Truthers

Well, it looks like of all the reasons they had to want to get rid of this Van Jones guy, they choose to focus on 9/11 Truth. It wasn’t enough that this guy was a “communist” and a “committed revolutionary”, no…  according to the Main Stream Media, he was forced out for calling Republicans (in general) a-holes and for being a 9/11 Truther, the two things he was right about.

Interesting, huh?

They’re framing the 9/11 Truth movement by associating it with disgraced “green” czar Van Jones. Being a communist and a revolutionary is perfectly OK, but demanding answers instead of lies is bad!? Or are they trying to imply that the 9/11 Truth movement is full of radical communists? Whatever they are leading up to is wrong. There are plenty of good reasons to get rid of Van Jones and the whole “green’ czar thing too (I wish), but demanding the truth is NOT one of them.

Why do I read this stuff?
